How Question 1 Works

  • Three passages are normally printed in the paper.
  • Students usually choose any two passages.
  • Part (a) asks for the main theme or teachings.
  • Part (b) asks why the theme is important for Muslims today.
  • Best answers are clear, focused and linked to the passage.
Important: For Qur’anic verses, students should use the translation printed in the Cambridge paper or a recognised translation approved by their teacher. These notes guide the meaning and exam approach; they are not a replacement for the original Qur’anic text.

Allah in Himself

Oneness, uniqueness, knowledge, power, authority and independence of Allah.

Group 2

Created World

Allah as Creator, Sustainer, Lord, Judge and Protector of creation.

Group 3

Messengers

Allah’s guidance through prophets, revelation, miracles, support and mercy.

Theme Group 1

Allah in Himself

This group focuses on Allah’s oneness, uniqueness, power, knowledge, authority, mercy and absolute independence.

What Students Must Learn

  • Allah is one and has no partner.
  • Allah is unlike creation and cannot be compared to anything.
  • Allah has complete knowledge and authority over everything.
  • Allah does not depend on anyone, while all creation depends on Him.
  • Muslims should worship Allah alone and avoid shirk.

Allah’s Relationship with the Created World

This group focuses on Allah as Creator, Lord, Sustainer, Guide, Judge and Protector of human beings and the universe.

  • Allah created the universe and provides for His creation.
  • Human beings should worship Allah because He created and sustains them.
  • Allah gives guidance, knowledge and protection.
  • Allah will judge every deed, even the smallest good or evil action.
  • Muslims should live with gratitude, obedience, responsibility and trust in Allah.

Theme Group 3

Allah’s Relationship with His Messengers

This group focuses on prophethood, revelation, divine support, miracles, guidance and Allah’s mercy towards His chosen messengers.

Sura 2:30–37 Adam عليه السلام, human responsibility and repentance
Sura 6:75–79 Ibrahim عليه السلام rejects false worship
Sura 5:110 Isa عليه السلام and miracles by Allah’s permission
Sura 93 Allah comforts and supports the Prophet ﷺ

What Students Must Learn

  • Allah chooses messengers to guide human beings.
  • Prophets teach Tawhid and call people away from false worship.
  • Miracles occur only by Allah’s permission, not by independent human power.
  • Allah supports, comforts and protects His messengers.
  • Muslims should respect all prophets and follow the final Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

How to Write Answers for Qur’anic Passages

Every passage should be prepared in two separate ways: Part (a) main theme and Part (b) importance of theme.

Part (a): Main Theme

  • Identify the central teaching of the passage.
  • Use words and ideas from the passage.
  • Explain what the passage teaches about Allah, creation or messengers.
  • Do not write a general story only; stay close to the passage.
  • Develop at least two or three clear points.

Part (b): Importance of Theme

  • Explain why the theme matters for Muslims today.
  • Link the theme with belief, worship, behaviour and daily life.
  • Show practical impact: prayer, Tawhid, gratitude, accountability, patience or trust.
  • Avoid repeating Part (a); apply the theme to Muslim life.
  • Use clear reasoning, not memorised vague lines.
